Martin Luther King, Jr. & the On-Going Legacy of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement

Durham Tech will be closed on Monday, January 16 for to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and achievements as an influential American civil rights leader.

Martin Luther King, Jr., speaking at an anti-war demonstration, New York City, 1967 / World Journal Tribune photo by Don Rice.

“Somewhere we must come to see that human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals. Without this hard work, time becomes an ally of the primitive forces of social stagnation. So we must help time and realize that the time is always right to do right.

“Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution,” Oberlin College Commencement, June 1965

Many choose to use this as a day of service to their communities– when we support our communities, we lift everyone up. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on the on-going legacy the 1960s Civil Rights Movement has had on our country and on current social justice and civil rights movements.

Keep reading for some books to explore contemporary reads and media inspired by and reflecting on the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. King’s life and legacy.

Winter Break and Looking Forward to 2022

The end of the semester is upon us!

The last day the Durham Tech Library will be open and Durham Tech Library staff will be available is Friday, December 17. All Durham Tech Libraries will be closed Monday and Tuesday, December 20-21 and the College will be closed from Wednesday, December 22 through Monday, January 3. The Libraries will reopen starting on Tuesday, January 4 and your library staff will be back and ready to help.

Have a Chromebook to return? If you miss us in December, plan on bringing it back when we return in January. Unless explicitly arranged, you need to put that Chromebook in the hands of a Durham Tech Library staff member. Do not put it in the book return! If you are taking classes again next semester, email us at library@durhamtech.edu to renew. Need some help with your Chromebook? Check out our Tech Tools Chromebook Help page. Need to borrow a Chromebook for the Spring semester? Check out that Chromebook Help page for more details.

Have a book to return? That can go in any of our campus book returns. We’ll check them in when we get back in January if you return them while we’re closed.

Have a rental textbook to return? Take it to the Bookstore on Main Campus in the Wynn Building (Building 10) or follow mailing instructions to make sure you get credit.

Need a book to read over break? Stop in while we’re open or check out our Dogwood Digital Collection to read or listen to our ebooks and audiobooks using the Libby app. Search for ‘Dogwood Digital’ in Libby and log in using your Durham Tech username and password (just like Sakai or Self-Service).

Want to know what you should start reading for the Read Great Things 2022 Challenge? Hold your horses, buddy. Those categories will be released January 1, 2022. Subscribe to the blog for notifications. Have you already completed the 2021 Challenge and SPRINT, filled out your form(s), and collected your prizes? If so, good for you! If not, what are you waiting for? You’ve got 16 whole days!

Need advising help? While our college locations are closed to in-person visits December 22 – January 3, Durham Tech will have admissions representatives available for enrollment, transcripts, and advising-related questions through our email at betterskills@durhamtech.edu or by calling an enrollment specialists at 919-536-7200 ext. 1125, 1149, or 1815. Your assigned librarian advisors will be back January 4 to answer questions if you can wait.
