I don’t know if you’ve heard, but 2018 is here and the library is launching a reading challenge!

To help you discover books for the reading challenge categories, we will be highlighting books from our collection that fit into different categories (and also count towards that last one– librarian recommendations).

Get excited!

This month we’re covering books that will be turned into movies or television shows this year.

These are only a few of all the page-to-screen adaptations happening this year, but you can find more here, here, and here.

#readgreatthings2018 protip: Many of these books can count towards 2 categories.

Remember, if we don’t have a copy of a book you’d like to read, we can get it for you through inter-library loan. Just ask a librarian.

Day of the Dead Display

If you have walked by the Main Campus Library recently you may have seen our new display in our front window. Courtesy of Cambiando Caminos the display is for Diá de Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

Observed from October 31st to November 2nd, this holiday is often affiliated with Halloween in the United States. However, this is a distinct and different holiday with its own history and traditions. Learn more below, or if you are off campus click here.

Make sure to stop by and see the lovely display!

September’s New Books

New Semester, New Books

Take one of these books home to enjoy. Or cry over. Or marvel at. Or learn from. Or all of the above.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back, Durham Tech!

As we begin the Fall 2017 semester, a few friendly library reminders:

Your student ID is your pass into the library. Current students need to have a up-to-date student ID. There will be a grace period the first week of classes, but after that, each student only gets 2 passes a semester (alternate photo ID required). Get or update your student ID at the Security Desk on any Durham Tech Campus –it should say Fall 2017.

Textbooks are available for in-library use. Behind the circulation desk, we have textbooks on reserve for many classes for anyone to use. These textbooks can’t leave the library and are loaned out on a first come, first served basis. If you’re looking at a way to cut costs or aren’t sure if you need to buy a book for a class, you’re welcome to use ours. You can check them out with your updated student ID/library card for two hours at a time.

Books and DVDs are here for you to borrow. We have all kinds of fiction and non-fiction books and DVDs (and even a small collection of CDs) that you can check out to take home. Books check out for three weeks; movies check out for one week. You can also renew items one time each. Don’t have what you’re looking for? We can get most books or articles for you from other libraries through interlibrary loan.

Librarians are here to help. The library has physical books as well as online databases full of books and articles, and librarians ready to teach you how to use them. We can also help you learn your way around the computers, printers, scanners, copiers, and around your course resources, like Sakai and your Connectmail. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Have a great semester and don’t forget to stop by and see us!

What We’re Reading: Soulless

This book was read by Courtney Bippley who is a Reference Librarian at the Main Campus Library.

Soulless by Gail Carriger

Why did you choose to read this book?

I’m doing the POPSUGAR reading challenge this year so I read this book to fulfill the steampunk novel requirement.

What did you like about it?

I enjoyed the main character who, unmarried, is considered to be a spinster but never lets that stop her from doing what she wants. She is a heroine who is very direct in thought, speech, and action, which is refreshing.

Did it remind you of any other book, or a movie?

It reminded me of the movie Pride and Prejudice and Zombies because of the historical/fantasy mash up aesthetic. I do realizes that they are set in different historical eras but the juxtaposition of the old fashioned clothes and manners against the fantasy elements (and the bloodier aspects of the plot) are very similar.

Who would you recommend the book to?

Anyone who likes steampunk books or a nice paranormal romance with some historical romance flavor.

What would you pair this book with?

A parasol to stylishly provide some shade for you and your book as you walk in the park and kill vampires.
