The series opens when a rising high school football player from South Central Los Angeles is recruited to play for Beverly Hills High. The show details the wins, losses, and the struggles of two families. They are in the same city, but they’re from two different worlds— the poverty-stricken Crenshaw and the well-to-do Beverly Hills. Friends, Family, and Football reign supreme in this series.
Why did you choose to watch this?
A few friends recommended this series. It was somewhat of a trending topic via my social networks, so I decided to give it a try. I loved it!
What did you like about it?
I love football, and I think in this time of being without a lot of organized sports, this was a welcome way to get in my daily dose of football. I also really like the character arcs. It helps that the actors are familiar and dreamy, as well.
Did it remind you of any other book, tv show, movie, or any other media?
It reminded me of the show Friday Night Lights a bit.
Was there anything particularly noteworthy about this?
I think this show will win some awards. The acting is really good and rhe storyline draws you in.
What feeling did it leave you with?
This show made me feel good. I binge-watched 2 seasons in 4 days, and I’m anxiously waiting for Season 3 [which is planned for sometime in 2021 due to COVID delays].
Who would you recommend this to?
I think teens, twenty-somethings, and adults in general will like this show. Bonus points if you like sports, particularly American football.
What would you pair this with?
I would pair All American with a plate of nachos and a bold ginger ale because those are my go-tos when watching my favorite sports.
Are there any books, podcasts, or films you’d recommend to someone who liked this?
For a nonfiction perspective, I’d recommend Thursday Night Lights: The Story of Black High School Football in Texas by Michael Hurd. (Available in the Durham Tech Main Campus Library collection–
