What We’re Watching: All American [tv series]
Need a little more football in your life?
This show was watched by Rachel Smith, Northern Durham Center Librarian.
Title: All American (tv series; 2 seasons available streaming on Netflix and the CW)
Genre: Drama
The series opens when a rising high school football player from South Central Los Angeles is recruited to play for Beverly Hills High. The show details the wins, losses, and the struggles of two families. They are in the same city, but they’re from two different worlds— the poverty-stricken Crenshaw and the well-to-do Beverly Hills. Friends, Family, and Football reign supreme in this series.

We had our first few days of fall, which means in addition to warm beverages, I’m also thinking about settling into a series of books to cozy up with (and also to complete one of the categories of the 2020 Read Great Things Challenge: A book that is part of a series).
There are lots of series out there, but sometimes it’s nice to start on something without having to wait for the next or final installment to be published (which may or may never come–I’m looking at you in particular, George R. R. Martin).
The Durham Tech Library has some of these complete series, but we also have a lot of series starters– let us know if you want the next book or books and we can borrow them from other libraries. Want to know how to get books from the library during the fall semester? Check out our Library To-Go info.

We’ve had a few solid days of fall-like weather, which reminds me warm beverage weather. With that in mind, what better way to celebrate the beginning of fall weather than to decorate your own mug?
Durham Tech Student Life will mail or reserve for in-library pickup mugs for the first 30 students who submit the September Crafternoon Mug Request Form (link under previous text) between Tuesday, September 22 and Thursday, September 24. One mug per student and current student status is required (and will be checked prior to mailing). If the form is closed, all the spaces have already been reserved. An oven that can get to 360 degrees is needed for this project.
Not a current student or want to get mugs for you and your family? We’re using Michael’s Ceramic Mug Kit by ArtMinds, available in stores and online.
Well, other than dumping a packet of [delicious] hot chocolate [preferably with those little dehydrated marshmallows] into your beautifully decorated mug, what else might you be able to do with it?
Two words: MUG CAKE

Curious about previous infectious disease outbreaks as we live through this one? Are these times really unprecedented?
Check out the PBS American Experience documentary The Forgotten Plague: Tuberculosis in America, available for free for all Durham Tech faculty, staff, and students and streaming through Films on Demand.
This documentary is recommended by Durham Tech biology and microbiology instructor Dorothy Wood.

August Crafternoon: Decorate Your Own Agenda or Notebook
Crafternoons are a partnership between the Durham Tech Student Government Association and the Library.
It’s back-to-school time, and usually we’d host a few Crafternoons so you can get organized and decorate your own planner/agenda or notebook. Since we’re 80% online this semester, we won’t be hosting face-to-face events, but we do have some opportunities for you to still get organized for the new semester with a fresh Durham Tech planner, begin your pandemic diary, or take notes for your new classes in a you-decorated Durham Tech notebook.
Able to make a quick trip to campus and pick up a blank agenda or notebook to decorate at home? We have a few to-go packets available for students in the Main Campus Library that include the blank agenda or notebook, a few pieces of scrapbook paper, and some stickers.
First come, first served. Check library hours for availability. Limit one packet per student.
Staying home and have a printer? Keep reading for files and instructions on how to print your own agenda and notebook.

What We’re Reading: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
Title: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Author: Suzanne Collins
Genre: prequel; science fiction; dystopia
Read Great Things 2020 Categories: A book that is part of a series; A bildungsroman; A controversial book; and A book suggested by a Durham Tech Librarian
This book was read by Meredith Lewis, the [mostly] Orange County Campus Librarian.
If you liked the original Hunger Games trilogy, you’ll probably enjoy or appreciate this. If you’re like me, you may need to re-read the other books, but I read this book and then re-read the series afterwards, pausing in the third book because everyone knows if you don’t keep reading, then the bad thing you know is going to happen totally won’t happen, right? (Spoiler: It still happened. Double spoiler: The series is about a society that pits its children against each other TO THE DEATH to control rebellion. Bad things happen in all. three. books.)

It’s hot, y’all.
It’s hot and humid and sticky and gross. This is that part of a North Carolina summer my relatives in Pennsylvania tell me is inhumane. (The joke is on them when they get snow in November though.)
Sometimes, when the sun seems angry at you personally and the world feels like it’s falling apart (see: pandemic, police brutality, climate change, the 24-hour news cycle), there’s nothing better than some ice cream to cool off and coat your insides with delicious sugar (or dairy-free with sugar substitute– do you). Want to surround yourself with ice cream history and recipes? The library can help with that.
