Winter Break and Looking Forward to 2022

The end of the semester is upon us!

The last day the Durham Tech Library will be open and Durham Tech Library staff will be available is Friday, December 17. All Durham Tech Libraries will be closed Monday and Tuesday, December 20-21 and the College will be closed from Wednesday, December 22 through Monday, January 3. The Libraries will reopen starting on Tuesday, January 4 and your library staff will be back and ready to help.

Have a Chromebook to return? If you miss us in December, plan on bringing it back when we return in January. Unless explicitly arranged, you need to put that Chromebook in the hands of a Durham Tech Library staff member. Do not put it in the book return! If you are taking classes again next semester, email us at library@durhamtech.edu to renew. Need some help with your Chromebook? Check out our Tech Tools Chromebook Help page. Need to borrow a Chromebook for the Spring semester? Check out that Chromebook Help page for more details.

Have a book to return? That can go in any of our campus book returns. We’ll check them in when we get back in January if you return them while we’re closed.

Have a rental textbook to return? Take it to the Bookstore on Main Campus in the Wynn Building (Building 10) or follow mailing instructions to make sure you get credit.

Need a book to read over break? Stop in while we’re open or check out our Dogwood Digital Collection to read or listen to our ebooks and audiobooks using the Libby app. Search for ‘Dogwood Digital’ in Libby and log in using your Durham Tech username and password (just like Sakai or Self-Service).

Want to know what you should start reading for the Read Great Things 2022 Challenge? Hold your horses, buddy. Those categories will be released January 1, 2022. Subscribe to the blog for notifications. Have you already completed the 2021 Challenge and SPRINT, filled out your form(s), and collected your prizes? If so, good for you! If not, what are you waiting for? You’ve got 16 whole days!

Need advising help? While our college locations are closed to in-person visits December 22 – January 3, Durham Tech will have admissions representatives available for enrollment, transcripts, and advising-related questions through our email at betterskills@durhamtech.edu or by calling an enrollment specialists at 919-536-7200 ext. 1125, 1149, or 1815. Your assigned librarian advisors will be back January 4 to answer questions if you can wait.

We’re looking forward to working with you in the Spring semester! Have a nice break!

All We Can Save Reading Circle

Do you ever get down after reading the news?

Ever feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the climate crisis?

Ever feel alone in worrying about the future?

Do you feel left out of conversations around sustainability and eco-consciousness?

Join our reading circle!

In the spring 2022 semester, the Durham Tech Library will be hosting a reading circle for the book All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis, an anthology edited by Dr. Ayana Johnson and Dr. Katherine Wilkinson about truth, courage, and climate solutions. The book tackles history, society, community, technology, intersectional feminism, climate change, climate solutions, and more.

All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis. Edited by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katharine K. Wilkinson.

What is a reading circle?

It’s like a book club, but just for this book. We will be following guidance from the All We Can Save Project, a nonprofit working to build a feminist climate resistance.

The All We Can Save Project logo

How long will it take?

10 weeks, with a meeting once a week. We will read essays and poems before each meeting and discuss them. The selections build on each other, so we highly suggest making it to at least 8-10 meetings.

When does it start?

It will start at the end of January and run through March.

Why are you doing a reading circle for this book?

Because I think it’s an amazing book that can foster community, increase knowledge, and renew hope. Read more of my thoughts about the book on the Durham Tech Library Blog.

Does the Durham Tech Library have copies of the book?

Yes! We have print copies and an audiobook available. If we run out of copies, we can get more through interlibrary loan.

Who can participate?

Anyone! This is not limited to Durham Tech employees only. Students, family members, and members of the public are also invited. All ethnicities, gender identities, and ages are encouraged to attend.

I’m interested! What next?

Fill out this interest form for more communication about the All We Can Save Circle.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please reach out to me at bippleyc@durhamtech.edu. I hope to hear from you soon!

What We’re Reading: Nomadland

nomadland: surviving america in the twenty-first century by jessica bruder
Available at the Main Campus (HD 6280 .B77 2017) and as an ebook through Dogwood Digital Library

Ever notice an RV parked by Walmart at midnight? Ever wonder where your Amazon packages came from? Do you imagine that life on the road embodies the American dream? Find out!

This book was read by Susan Baker, Main Campus Reference Librarian.

Title: Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century

Author: Jessica Bruder

Genre: Travel…sociology…retirement…economics…poverty? Nonfiction works, too.

Read Great Things 2021 categories: A book about social justice or equity, A microhistory (I personally used this title for this category), Choose your own category: A book made into a movie; A book suggested by a Durham Tech library staff member

Why did you choose to read, listen to, or watch this?

I kept seeing this title—for the book, for the movie—in libraries, in magazines, in articles.  I resisted. But its persistent presence, as well as the image of on the cover, ultimately seduced me— hasn’t everyone dreamed of hitting the road in a vintage Airstream, especially during the darkest days of the pandemic?

What We’re Watching: Summer of Soul

Title: Summer of Soul (…or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)

Directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson

Genre: Documentary film, available on Hulu

This movie was reviewed by Julie Humphrey, Durham Tech Library Director.

Why did you choose to watch this film?

I’ve missed live music and concerts so much during the pandemic. I relished the chance to watch some amazing live performances from incredible African American musicians from the 1960’s.
